Quick reads

Short, gold-specific notes. Tap one.

How do macro events tend to move gold?
EventHow gold has tended to react
Fed rate decisionLower rate expectations have tended to support gold; higher ones to weigh on it.
US inflation (CPI)Mixed. Hedge demand can lift gold, while fears of higher rates can pull it down.
Real yieldsRising real yields have tended to weigh on gold, which pays no interest.
US dollarA stronger dollar has tended to weigh on gold, which is priced in dollars.
US jobs reportStrong data can lift rate expectations and weigh on gold. Weak data, the reverse.
Geopolitical stressSafe-haven demand has often lifted gold, sometimes only briefly.
Central bank buyingSteady reserve buying has added support over time.

Tendencies, not rules. Several drivers often pull at once, and past reactions do not predict future ones.

Inflation, real yields and gold

The real yield is the interest rate after inflation. Gold pays no interest, so when real yields rise, holding gold costs more in missed income and it has tended to come under pressure. When real yields fall, that cost shrinks.

That is why a hot inflation number can push gold either way: it depends on whether markets expect rates to rise faster than prices.

Managing risk around big data releases

Prices can jump in seconds when data lands, and spreads can widen.

  • Know the time. Major US data usually lands at 8:30pm Malaysia time while US daylight saving is in force, and 9:30pm the rest of the year.
  • Size for the gap. Cut size or stay flat if a sudden jump would hurt.
  • Know your stop can slip. In a fast move, a stop loss may fill at a worse price.
  • Let the first spike settle before deciding.
FOMO: name it before it costs you

Fear of missing out shows up as chasing a move that has already run, entering without a stop, or doubling size after a missed trade.

A simple test: if you cannot say where you would exit if wrong, it is not a setup, it is a feeling. Missing a move costs nothing. Chasing one can.

A risk routine for experienced traders
  • Set a maximum loss per trade and per day, and stop when you reach it.
  • Check margin before adding to a position, not after.
  • Reduce size when volatility rises, rather than widening stops.
  • Review your trades weekly against your plan.
